- Persistent local transmission in Luanda despite the fact that more than seven million people have been vaccinated.

- Local transmission reported in seven highly populated provinces including Luanda.

- The continued extension of the outbreak to new provinces and new districts.

- High risk of spread to neighbouring countries.

First Emergency Committee on yellow fever

19 May 2016 – The first WHO convened Emergency Committee on yellow fever has met in response to the ongoing outbreak of the disease in central Africa. While not considering the outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, the Committee emphasized the serious national and international risks posed by urban yellow fever outbreaks and offered advice on immediate actions to be taken.

Yellow fever vaccination essential for Angola

17 May 2016 -- As efforts to bring an outbreak of yellow fever in Angola under control continue, WHO reminds all travellers to the country that they are required to receive the yellow fever vaccination and to have a valid certificate of vaccination to prove that they are protected from the disease and to prevent its further spread. There has been extensive local transmission in Luanda, prompting the vaccination of more than 6 million people in the province since February this year. Angola extends yellow fever vaccination campaign to Huambo and Benguela provinces

April 2016 -- As Angola grapples with its worst yellow fever outbreak in decades, the Ministry of Health, with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) and partners have extended the vaccination campaign beyond the capital Luanda into Huambo and Benguela – 2 of the other 5 provinces reporting local transmission.
