Public health prizes awarded

One woman, 3 men and a group of a few dozen women and men.

That may not sound like much, but – together – they represent a juggernaut of expertise and accomplishment in the field of public health. They also represent this year’s winners of awards that were presented on Friday 27 May 2016 during the plenary meeting of the World Health Assembly.

The prizes were created by, or set up in memory of, eminent health professionals. Each year, national health administrations and any former prize recipient can submit a nomination. The Executive Board, in its January session, designates the winners based on recommendations made by the selection panel of each foundation awarding a prize.

This year’s winners come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and have worked on issues related to public health using a wide variety of methods.
